Post 4 was chartered on June 21,1919, shortly after the American Legion was established. We were the fourth post to be chartered in the state of WI. Initially named George Chapman Post in honor of George Chapman, a WWI casualty, Belter was added in 1948 in honor of George Belter who was a casualty of WW II. We frequently work hand in hand with the VFW Post in town since many veterans belong to both organizations. The title "Athens Area Veterans" is frequently seen around town.
We are quite active in the community with some of the events as follows:
Prior to Memorial Day several veterans, along with the Boy Scouts, place small flags at four country cemeteries as well as the Athens cemetery. We also put about 70 flags up along Hwy 97. On Memorial Day, we render honors at the previously mentioned country cemeteries. At 10:00, we gather at the Community Hall for a service. The AHS band and choir along with the community choir provide musical numbers, Badger Boy, Badger Girl, and Voice of Democracy recipients are recognized. There is also a guest speaker. Afterwards we march to the Athens Cemetery stopping at the bridge to honor those lost at sea. Upon completion of there is a pot luck at the hall.
We co-sponsor the Flag Day Raffle with the VFW as one of our fundraisers.
For the Athens Fair, the famous "Beer Bar" is staffed by Legion and VFW members and family members, if they are legal age. The proceeds are divided evenly between the Legion and VFW. Participation is strongly encouraged since this is the one of two fund raisers we have. With these funds we provide scholarships, Badger Boy & Girl sponsorships, financial support for Circle of Joy, Athens Area Fire and Ambulance, Post Prom Party, Old Timers Band, as well as honor other requests we receive. We also hold the charter on the Athens Cub and Boy Scouts.
For Veteran’s Day, we attend church at Christ United Church and Trinity Lutheran Church on the Sunday nearest November 11th. On the 11th, we participate at school programs at the five Athens Schools as well as attend mass at St. Anthony’s Church.
We march in two area parades, Edgar Fireman's Celebration and Athens Fair.
We render funeral honors for veterans, either graveside or at the church or funeral home.
In November, we have a membership dinner along with the VFW and Auxiliaries.
Legion meetings are at 7:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the Community Hall. The only months we do not meet are August and December. Because of our two fundraisers, our dues are only $30 per year.
If you have any questions or suggestions please call me at 715-257-7353. Again, Welcome!
