Property Tax Information
PAYMENT METHODS:
Taxes may be paid at the Village Clerk’s Office, Monday thru Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. The Clerk’s Office is located in the Municipal Building at 203 Alfred Street. You can also deposit your payment in the drop box located outside the Municipal Building.
You may also mail in your payment to Village of Athens, Po Box 220, Athens, WI 54411. Be sure it is postmarked by the due date. Checks received by mail after the due must have the post office cancellation date on it to be accepted on time. IF YOU NEED A TAX BILL RECEIPT, a self-addressed stamped envelope must be enclosed otherwise no receipt will be mailed.
INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS:
You may either pay your property tax bill in full or you may pay it in the 2 installments as indicated on the tax bill. First installments are paid to the Village of Athens and are due on January 31st. First installments must include all special assessments, charges and taxes. Any specials entered in the tax roll can’t be postponed. If the first installment or payment in full is not paid on or before January 31, the entire amount remaining unpaid is delinquent as of February 1st and you will be charged 1% interest and 1/2 % penalty per month from February 1st. Partial months are treated as full months.
The second installment is to be made to the Marathon County Treasurer (500 Forest Street, Wausau, WI 54403) and is due on July 31st. If the 2nd installment of taxes is not paid by the due date, the entire amount remaining unpaid is delinquent. Interest and penalties on delinquent taxes are charged from February 1st, regardless of when the taxes become delinquent.
